April 2004: Video recording session

In april 2004 Frank Fiedler from Popol Vuh, who is nowadays working as a cameraman, filmed a Nekropolis 23 live in studio session with several professional digital video cameras. Chris Karrer from Amon Düül II joined us on violin (until he broke it while playing...) and guitar for some songs. Peter's friend Martin supervised the recording of the music. The music itself was completely improvised (business as usual for Nekropolis 23...)

The long-term plan is to author a DVD from the footage. But first, we'll have to sift throught the pile of tapes from 3 cameras and decide which material is good enough. Then we'll have to cut the film and find someone who is willing to turn this into a DVD within our very limited budget...

May 2004: Finishing the Nekropolis 23 video

On may, 24th, Peter and Udo went to Frank Fiedler's studio to put the finishing touches to our Nekropolis 23 video. We synched the mastered audio and video recordings, did some last cutting and decided on a tracklist and running order. The finished video ist ca. 83 minutes in length and features 10 songs in different configurations of the band: the core trio (bass, drums, keys), quartet (the trio plus violin or guitar and one piece in a violin, guitar, bass, drums lineup) and a large lineup consisting of the core trio plus guitar plus violin. (Previous images from the video recording sessions)

June 2004: DVD screenshots

Some screenshots from one of our working versions of the Nekropolis 23 DVD. The live portion of the DVD will be augmented by some bonus material: Peter has resurrected one of his experimental films from the early 80s, "Seelenwanderung" (which translates als "transmigration" / "metempsychosis"). The soundtrack of this 23 minute film will be Peter's "Tiefe" ("The Deep"), which has been previously released on cassette only, an extended electronic composition from ca. 1982, created with the PPG Wave 2 synthesizer.

July 2005: DVD cover artwork and tracklist

Nekropolis 23 DVD CoverOur efforts to find a suitable label for either the Vol. 2 audio album or the DVD have been sadly in vain for various reasons. So Peter has finally decided to release the Nekropolis 23 DVD via his own label after all. The DVD authoring will take place in the next weeks and we hope to have the final product ready this fall, maybe even in the late summer. Of course, we'll keep you posted about this. Until then have a look at the probable cover art at the right, which is still missing the title of the DVD which is being decided upon this week. The probable tracklist:

  1. The Yellow King
  2. Heavy Psychedelia
  3. Apokalyptische Tempelmusik
  4. Heliotrope
  5. Sketches of Kadath
  6. Nameless City
  7. Reanimator
  8. Shamblin'Bear
  9. Standard No.#23
  10. Cosmic Break

July 2005: DVD title

The upcoming Nekropolis 23 DVD will be called "Tidal Shift". By the way: Peter's painting that is featured on the DVD cover is called "Die Gezeiten", i.e. "Tides".
